What is an S/MIME Certificate?

Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (S/MIME) certificates secure email communication through end-to-end encryption and identify the sender via a digital signature. They are a standard for public key encryption and signing of MIME data.

With S/MIME certificates, recipients of an email can identify where the email came from, so employees can verify that the email came from a CEO, CFO, or other member within the organization and can trust the “From” address of the email.

What are SSL certificates and why do you need them?

SSL certificates are an essential part of the data encryption process that secures online transactions. They act as digital passports providing authentication to protect the confidentiality and integrity of website communication with browsers.

The SSL certificate’s role is to initiate secure sessions with the user’s browser through the SSL protocol (Secure Sockets Layer). This secure connection cannot be established without the SSL certificate, which digitally associates business information with a cryptographic key.

Any organization involved in e-commerce must have an SSL certificate on its web server to ensure the security of customer and business information and the protection of financial transactions.

How do SSL certificates work?

  • A browser or server attempts to connect to a website (i.e., a web server) secured with SSL. The browser/server requests the web server to identify itself.
  • The web server sends a copy of its SSL certificate to the browser/server.
  • The browser/server checks whether it trusts the SSL certificate or not. If it does, it sends a message to the web server.
  • The web server sends back a digitally signed confirmation to initiate an SSL encrypted session.
  • Encrypted data is shared between the browser/server and the web server.

The use of SSL certificates offers numerous benefits. SSL customers can:

  • Utilize HTTPS, which enhances Google ranking.
  • Create more secure experiences for their customers.
  • Build customer trust and improve conversions.
  • Protect both customer and internal data.
  • Encrypt browser-to-server and server-to-server communication.
  • Enhance the security of their mobile and cloud applications.

What types of SSL/TLS certificates are there?

Extended Validation (EV) and Organization Validated (OV) certificates are widely used by organizations looking to provide strong encryption technology and identity verification to their online customers. Encryption ensures that customer data such as credit card information and passwords cannot be stolen while in transit. Identity verification allows website visitors to verify that the site they are on is legitimate. The level of verification checks behind the different certificate types is reflected in the price variations. The increased scrutiny, particularly for EV and OV certificates, makes these high assurance certificates more expensive.

Extended Validation (EV) Certificates

Organization Validated (OV) Certificates

For OV certificates, the organization is validated in addition to domain ownership, and the certificate details can be viewed in most major web browsers, allowing online users to determine if the site they are on is legitimate.

Domain Validated (DV) Certificates

A website secured with a DV certificate only displays a locked padlock in the address bar but does not show organizational information because it does not exist. These certificates only validate domain ownership, can be obtained anonymously, and do not link a domain to a person, place, or entity. For this reason, many websites using DV certificates are associated with fraudulent activities.
